Project #1: STEM Academy Traffic Issues

We were tasked by both ASU Preparatory Academy and the House of Refuge to investigate traffic issues around ASU Prep's STEM Academy. After investigation, we determined that the location of the traffic route affected the efficiency of the pick up and drop off process. However, after meeting with the President of the House of Refuge, it was found out that it was not the efficiency of the pick up and drop off process that was the issue, it was distracted driving and the potential of injury from distracted driving that was the issue.

Thus, our group decided to implement a No Texting Campaign at the STEM Academy to affect change in distracted driving.  We presented to the students and had them create posters as part of a contest. The winning poster will be replicated and posted around the school campus.

Recently, we selected the winning posters and are taking next steps to further our cause.

Update #1: 13 December 2013

Now that the winning poster has been chosen, we have redesigned, or upgraded it, so that it stands out when people drive by.

The poster will now be printed and posted around the campus, along with a banner.

Project #2: Reforming STEM Club

Our school adopted a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) club about two years ago. The main aspect of this club was to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition. However, because it was so young, there were many problems regarding structure and organization of the club. As an engineering-based group, we were tasked to analyze the issues of the club and come up with solutions to solve the problems.

After coming up with a list of rules and regulations, our group met with Mr. Ruiz, our school's math teacher and Robotics Club advisor, to discuss the changes proposed to be implemented. This project is still ongoing and we hope to enact these changes by January, when the competition starts.
